American Flag Meaning
The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies of the US: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia. The 50 stars represent the individual states that make up the nation. Popular history states the red of the flag represents valor, white stands for liberty or purity and blue represents justice, loyalty and perseverance. These meanings are unofficial though.
Interesting American Flag Fact:
The American flag is often called “the stars and stripes” or “Old Glory.”
Here we have two artworks that were chosen among the entire grade 5 batch for Busan International Foreign School, South Korea.
The first design has been created by Isabella and the second by Fiona. Thank you so much to both girls for their great work.
Here’s what the artists have to say:
Isabella says, “My artwork shows friendship, kindness and love, which I think the whole world needs. Peace is important to make the world a safe place to live in.”
Fiona says, “My artwork is a combination of different symbols of peace that sum-up love in the world. I think everybody should be an advocate of peace and to start in
school to make it a friendlier place for everyone.”
Much appreciation to everyone in Grade 5 and to André Quimpo PYP Visual Art Teacher for being such an amazing supporter of this project.
South Korean Flag Meaning:
White is a traditional colour of the Korean people. The emblem in the centre of the South Korean flag represents the dual forces of yin (blue) and yang (red). The yin and yang balance each other and maintain a harmonious existence by being complementary opposites, positive and negative, active and passive, male and female, night and day, good and evil and so on. Yin is the passive or static mode and yang the active or dynamic mode. The trigrams represent the elements of fire, water, earth, wood, and metal.
From the Netherlands we have received this lovely design which has been drawn by Damaris Andrade age 15. Damaris produced the drawing with the help of the schools cultural-artistical education teacher Daniëlle Bosman and her English teacher Chantal Laarman.
Damaris says: We all wish for peace because this is the way to happiness.
Damaris went on to answer the following questions:
What was in your mind when you were creating your drawing?
This drawing represents what peace feels like for me. Different cultures live in this world. Together, they form a brotherhood. Racism destroys this brotherhood, but peace unites it.
Why do you think peace is important?
Peace means love and happiness. Without peace you have neither.
A huge thank you to Chantal Laarman and everyone involved from the CSG Augustinus school.
Netherlands Flag Meaning:
The red stripe which was originally orange, along with the white and blue stripes, are based on the heraldic colors (coat of arms) of Prince William of Orange, who led the fight for Dutch independence.
